Today, for the first time, Texas surged past California in both caseloads and death totals.
At the end of July, Texas occupied the number three position on the table, after California and Florida. In August, while Florida significantly tapered and fell to the number three position, California and Texas moved in tandem, staying somewhat down trajectory. In September and October, while Texas trended upward, California moved sideways, paving Texas's way to eclipse.
In August, California averaged 6,699 daily cases, while Texas averaged 6,194 daily cases. In September, California logged a lower average of 3,543 versus Texas' 4,075 (even without the 9/22 numbers when Texas announced a massive correction/update). In October thus far, Texas has been ahead with 4,278, whereas Califonia has been consolidating at 3,192.

Though Texas has been struggling with a high positivity rate, its recovery and active rates have improved, allowing better hospital resources access. Conversely, alongside Arizona and Florida, its testing credentials have remained sub-par, while California has picked up significant momentum in the last three months. Since their actual case totals and death tolls are running neck-to-neck, Texas's population death rate has remained high (considering that Texas has 10M fewer people than California).
Stay Safe!
