Coronavirus Outbreak – Georgia is in the middle of Resurgence

Georgia, along with the other southeastern states, has been facing resurgence since late May, causing serious confusion and concern among local public health professionals as they were expecting gradual-to-total taper in the region during the hot summer months.

Highlights...

1. The total number of cases grew from a paltry 4,748 on 4/1 to a whopping 56,801 on 6/13, causing a gigantic 1,100% surge. Though the daily cases peaked and totally tapered by 5/18, the trend immediately reversed to a classic resurgence, getting closer to the pre-peak highs. The 7-day moving average confirms the rapidly rising tide as well.

2. During the prior tapering off period between 5/8 and 5/17, the daily cases averaged at 598, while the average has risen to 749 in first thirteen days of June, sparking the recent resurgence. The recent moving average trendline is also upward sloping, thus statistically confirming the on-going resurgence.

3. The total death toll surged from 154 on 4/1 to a tragic 2,446 on 6/13 -- a horrific 1,500% spike. Though the death chart is multi-modal, meaning multiple competing peaks in April and May, it did taper in early June drawing a big sigh of relief from all and sundry. Unfortunately, the resurgence has triggered a rising death toll, as evidenced by the upswing in the moving average trendline.

4. While the daily death toll averaged 32 in April-May, it dropped to 24 during the tapering off period between 5/22 and 6/7, reversing course immediately thereafter with a daily average of 48. Accordingly, the moving average trendline shows a V-shaped upswing.

5. While most of the Northeast states have already achieved per capita testing of at least 100K, Georgia has been way behind, registering at 67K. It has to increase the testing to have a better handle on the surge.

Stay safe!
