The scatter chart (top) shows the total cases accelerated for Spain since mid-March, thus eclipsing Italy's total on 4/4. For instance, on 3/20 Italy had 47,021 cases while Spain had 21,571 (46%); on 3/30 Italy moved up to 101,739 when Spain recorded a massive jump to 87,956 (86%); and on 4/4 Spain eclipsed Italy, registering a higher case total of 126,168 (101%) vis-a-vis Italy's 124,632.
That is why the regression graph (bottom) shows a fairly non-linear relationship between them. Due to the aforesaid acceleration in Spain's data distribution, the polynomial trendline, therefore, reveals a perfect relationship.
The spread became the widest on 3/22 when the absolute deviation rose to 30,370 (59,138 vs. 28,768), as evidenced by both graphics.
Hopefully, the outbreak has peaked for both countries considering their total death tolls have declined in the last three days. Thus far, they have encountered horrific death tolls of 15,887 (I) and 12,641 (S), respectively.
Stay safe!
